The story so far….

It all started in 2004, when a group of friends in Hampshire got together in a school theatre a put on a production of Guys and Dolls. Every single participant, on stage and off, was a young adult, and they surprised everybody (including themselves) when it sold out and got standing ovations. The next year, more young adults from more schools and colleges got involved, and RicNic was born. Since then, RicNic has set up new summer programmes in Oxford, London and Burton, but our ethos hasn’t changed. RicNic shows belong completely to the young adults who make them happen – whether in the cast, band, crew or production team. There’s a role for everybody, including those who’ve never done theatre before. RicNic is about much more than shows: it’s about friendships for life, about taking control of your own creativity, about developing new skills and interests. It’s about learning. It’s about passion. It’s about fun. Today, RicNic is a flourishing theatre company that works with approximately 350 young people each year through summer productions, schools workshops and mentoring opportunities. Whether those young people are looking to pursue a creative career and need support and experience as they start on that pathway, or they are an individual with limited creative experience needing to boost their key skills and self-confidence; there is a place for them at RicNic. RicNic has a small team of staff and trustees, who are all passionate about the positive impact that being involved in the arts can bring and are committed to ensuring that every young person feels welcomed into the RicNic Family. From the very start, it was really important to us that nobody paid to take part – and that’s the same now. We work year round on our fundraising to ensure that our projects remain free to participate in wherever possible. We also believe that ‘free’ can also mean ‘high quality’ and we are fortunate to work with a team of amazing, creative Ambassadors who support our projects with their knowledge of the creative industries and our Associates Board of former participants who support new generations of RicNic members as they go on their RicNic journey. The fact that so many of the individuals supporting our development are RicNic alumni themselves, is testament to the impact their involvement had. As we move towards our 20th Anniversary in 2024, we have many exciting new plans to bring RicNic to as many young people as we can. Whether you are looking to get involved in a project, attend one of our productions or support our work as a funder, we look forward to welcoming you to the RicNic Family.

About us

"I can't quite express how much this company, and the people in it, means to me. In them I was able to find a place with people who were just as weird as me, and they were totally cool with it. I was finally able to find somewhere I am comfortable being me, which I've never truly had before.”
